中秋节和“Chinese August 15”
适逢中秋节，想起一个与中秋节英文翻译有关的 Chinglish 错误，觉得很有代表性，故记而述之。
读者会问：“中秋节” 的英文译称，基本上学英语的人都知道是：Mid Autumn Festival, 或 Moon Festival，或 Moon Day，有何翻译上的问题呢？这的确不错。但如有人再问一句：What is Mid Autumn Festival? 或 When is Mid Autumn Festival? 就不是所有人都能回答清楚了。我在上英语口语课时做过一个测试，问学生：When is Mid Autumn Festival? 要求用英语回答。居然大多数人都懵住了，没有一个人讲得出来。有一个学生犹犹疑疑地说：It’s on August 15th, but in Chinese …
“中国人的8月15日”？！显然这个讲法有点牵强附会或答非所问。关键的问题出在农历与公历混淆。中秋节是以中国农历 Chinese lunar calendar 计日的，我们日常说的8月15日 August 15 却是以西历或公历 solar calendar 计日的，两者风马牛不相干。然而以上这种表述，在很多中国人中却相当普遍。
2010年上海世博会期间，笔者曾经看到过一个组委会统一印发的《上海市民学英语小册子》，里面对“中秋节” 的解释是：Mid Autumn Festival is on the Chinese August 15 every year ...。当时就觉得，这个解释等于没有解释，它让不了解中国传统农历假日的老外，只会越听越糊涂。果然，有一次一个美国朋友就问我：“John，what is Chinese August 15th?” 晕！... 可见，即使在“官方”的广告宣传材料中，也不乏令老外困惑的 Chinglish。
那末正确的表述应该是什么呢？是：Mid Autumn Festival is on the 15th day of the 8th month of Chinese lunar year（或 on Chinese lunar calendar），或后半段也可稍简述为 ...on the 8th Chinese lunar month。比较繁琐吧？但一个字也不能省。这里关键是引进了 Chinese lunar year or month 即中国农历年或月的表述，以区别于公历。其返回中文的准确解释就是：中秋节是中国农历的八月十五日，这样说老外就不会搞错了。
如老外再问：Then what date is it? 或 When is it? 你就应该用公历来解释了： It is on September 19th this year，即：今年的中秋节是9月19日；注意：这里不能漏掉 this year，因为每年中秋节的日子都不一样；所以最好再加一句：It’s on different date every year，这样表述，老外肯定就彻底弄明白了。
以此类推，中国农历春节是：Spring Festival is on the 1st day of the 1st month of Chinese lunar year（或 Chinese New Year )，因为又是全年第一天，也可简述为：Spring Festival is on the 1st day of Chinese lunar year, 同理，元宵节是：Lantern’s Festival is on the 15th day of Chinese lunar year端午节是：Dragon Boat Festival is on the 5th day of the 5th month of Chinese lunar year，七夕节是：Chinese Valentine’s Festival is on the 7th day of the 7th month of Chinese lunar year，重阳节是：Double Nine Festival is on the 9th day of the 9th month of Chinese lunar year。
中国农历节日的上述表述，只有一个是例外，那就是清明节。因为清明节是以公历计日的，如老外问：When is Tomb Sweeping Festival？你就必须回答： It’s on April 5th every year，而非其他。
