                    FIRST TIME TO MEET

1.      Dialogues:

PART ONE

(Kevin Gao encounters with John Smith somewhere in Suzhou on a Friday evening.)

W: Hi, my name is Kevin Gao. What's your name?

J: I am John Smith. But you can call me John.

W: How are you, John?

J: I’m fine.

W: Where are you from?

J: I am from New York City, the United States of America. And you?

W: I am Suzhou native. Suzhou is my hometown.

J: So, you are a local person.

W: Yes, nice to meet you, John!

J: Nice to meet you too, Kevin!

W: John, is this your first time to Suzhou?

J: No, I’ve been to Suzhou a couple of times.

W: Really? When did you come first time?

J: Five years ago, when I came to China as an exchange student in Xi’an, Shanxi Province.

W: How long are you going to stay here?

J: Another three months, according to my visa valid period. But I will try to stay as long as I can.

W: Good luck! By the way, do you like the city?

J: Of course. Suzhou is such a beautiful city, and people here are so nice and friendly.

W: Have you ever traveled to other cities in China before?

J: Yes, I’ve traveled to Shanghai, Hangzhou and Nanjing. But Suzhou is my favorite city.

W: I see. There is an old saying in China: Suzhou and Hangzhou are Paradise on Earth. One

would be living for nothing if never been there.

J: That‘s absolutely right.

PART TWO

W: John, what are you doing here in Suzhou?

J: I am working for iCanSay International English Training Center.

W: I know this place. It’s at W.Ganjiang Road, and to the south of Shilu Walk Street, isn’t it?

J: Yes, it is. What about you?

W: I am a student in Suzhou Jianghuai International High School.

J: It sounds like a school founded by both Chinese and foreign people.

W: Yes, the key founder is from Taizhou city in Jiangsu Province.

J: Really? Where is your school?

W: It’s in Dushuhu International Education Park, where many colleges and schools are located.

J: How long have you been studying at this school?

W: I am a first year student.

J: It’s great! Then what school did you go before there?

W: I went to Suzhou Pingjiang Middle School. I’ve just graduated from there.

J: I see. But how can you speak English so fluently?

W: My parents sent me to off-campus English training school years ago and I have been practicing oral English since then.

J: That’s amazing.

W: You know what? Nowadays many Chinese young studnets want to improve their spoken English, because they and their families realize communication skill in English is

so important to their future development.

J: I can see that too. Actually that’s why I made my choice to become an English teacher in Suzhou.

J: Excuse me, Kevin, but I have to go for an English class. Nice talking with you!

W: Nice talking with you too! John, can we keep in touch in the future?

J: Certainly. This is my mobile phone number.

W: And this is mine.

M:  Well, it’s time to go home.

G:  Oh, marvelous. Can we go now?

M:  No hurry, George. Have you finished your homework?

G:  Yes, sure. Do you want to check?

M:  (After check)Hmm, you’ve done a good job. But be sure to turn off the computer and the air-conditioning before you leave.

G:  Don’t worry; I’ll do it right now. What else should I do?

M:  When you pass the front desk, don’t forget to sign your name on the attendance recording paper.

G:  No, I won’t. Thank you for reminding me. Then what about you?

M:  I will stay to prepare my course material for next week.

G:  Don’t work too late, Mark. See you next Monday.

M:  See you. You have a nice weekend.

PART THREE

(George and Mike are talking about a group study in the class)

G:  Hey, Mike, it’s time for the weekly English Salon study now.

M:  Oh, no. This is killing me!

G:  What’s the matter?

M:  I‘ve got to finish my homework by tonight, but I don’t have enough time.

G:  So what?

M:  I’d better not go to the Salon today. So, could you do me a favor?

G:  What is it?

M:  Could you ask for leave from the teacher on my behalf? And bring me back any valuable information from it.

G:  Out of the question.

M:  Thanks a million.

G:  That’s okay. After all, we are running the same busy school work together.

PART FOUR

(Math class representative Mark is giving an announcement on overtime reviewing study to students.)

M:  Hello, everybody attention please. I have a notice to announce. Since we are tight up with our final exam reviewing, we are going to have overtime class for make-up from tomorrow on.

G:  Well, how often for this class and how late can we go home each time?

M:  The make-up class will be twice a week on every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 3:00 to 5:00, up to the beginning of the final .

G:  Oh, no! We are already studying too hard.

M:  I know. I really appreciate you guys’ hard study. I’ve asked for course credit added to your term evaluation from the math teacher and he agreed.

J:   That’s good news. I have no problem with overtime study. Thank you, teacher Mark.

M:  That’s ok. By the way, George and Judy, would it bother you to stay late this evening and help me finish some course materials?

J:   No problem. Let me just call home and tell my mom I will be late.

G:   Poor Judy! But Mark, I am afraid I can’t. I have to go home to take care of my little sister. She is not feeling well today.
