Chinese people have the custom of celebrating harvest on the Mid-Autumn Festival Day since ancient times. This custom is quite similar to that of celebrating the Thanksgiving Day in North America. The tradition of celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival became popular throughout China in early Tang dynasty. The 15th day of the 8th month of Chinese lunar year is a day for people to worship the moon. On this day, the whole family would get together under the brightly shining moon to appreciate its beauty. In 2006 Mid-Autumn Festival was listed as Chinese cultural heritage, and in 2008 it was classified as a national holiday in China. Moon cakes, as indispensable delicious food for the festival, are gifts people send to relatives and friends and enjoyed on family gatherings. There are usually stamped Chinese characters such as “longevity”,“good fortune” and “harmony” on the traditional moon cakes.
