1. Dialogue
PART ONE
(David is calling a taxi to Suzhou Railway Station.)
D: Excuse me, is this taxi taken?
T: No. May I help you, Sir?
D: Suzhou Railway Station. I need to catch a train at 10 o’clock. Time is really pressing. Could you hurry up a little, please?
T: We’ll make it if the traffic is not too heavy. I’ll try my best, Sir.
D: That’s good. Thank you very much.
T: No problem.
(After arriving at the Station)
T: Ok. Here we are.
D: Thanks to the God! We are just on time. How much is the taxi fare?
T: Twenty Yuan.
D: Here is a one hundred bill. Just give me seventy yuan change, and you can keep the rest. I need a receipt.
T: Sure. But we don’t take tips. Here you are.
PART TWO
(David is purchasing a ticket at the Railway Station Ticket Office)
D: Excuse me, miss, can I have a train ticket from Suzhou to Shenzhen?
T: Yes, we have three types of ticket available: high speed bullet train, motor train and ordinary train.
D: I want ordinary train.
T: There are also four kinds of seat available: hard seat, soft seat, hard sleeper and soft sleeper. Which one do you want?
D: I’d like to have soft sleeper, leaving tomorrow around 4pm.
T: Let me check… Ok, we only have upper seat available, 4:30pm leaving Shanghai South Railway Station.
D: How come I can get on a train in Shanghai?
T: You need to take a long distance bus from Suzhou South Bus Station to Shanghi to transfer. Is it convenient for you?
D: That’s fine. I can manage it by myself. Let me take it.
PART THREE
(Andy is talking with David on the train from Shenyang to Nanjing.)
A: Excuse me! Is this the hard sleeper carriage 10, seat No.104 middle?
D: Yes. But you can sit on the bottom seat if you’d like. This is more convenient for you.
A: It’s very nice of you! You sound like a Northerner.
D: Quite right. I am from Shenyang, Northeast China. Have you ever been there?
A: No. I haven’t got the chance to go yet.
D: That’s a pity. You should have. How far are you going, may I ask?
A: I am going as far as Nanjing.
D: Me too. Actually Nanjing is the destination of this train.
A: Exactly. Are you on a business trip?
D: Well, you may say so. This is my first trip to Nanjing. Do you know when we’ll arrive there?
A: According to the timetable, we should arrive at 5:30pm.
D: Do you suppose the train will arrive on time?
A: I’m sure it will. But we’ve got hours to go before then.
D: Yes, sitting in a train like this is really boring. I think I need a nap.
A: Keep watching at your belongings, there might be some dishonest persons around.
D: Don’t worry. I definitely will.
PART FOUR
(David is talking with Anthony on his trip to Dalian for a vacation.)
A: I heard that you would go to Dalian next week.
D: Yes, I want to pay a visit to my parents.
A: Have you booked the ticket?
D: Not yet. I’m wondering whether I should take the train, the ship or the airplane.
A: If I were you, I would take the ship. The trip would be an interesting and rewarding experience. It offers us a unique opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery at sea.
D: Yes, you are right. And the fare is reasonable. But the sea journey takes a longer time.
A: To me, the trip itself is part of the holiday. During the journey, I can make new friends, meet interesting people, play games of different kinds, or simply relax myself on the spacious deck. What a fantastic trip!
D: Maybe, for a person who has a one-month long vacation, it’s nothing. But it’s not me. So I think a train may be a better choice.
A: I can hardly enjoy sitting in a train for more than 10 hours. The train compartments often get cramped and stuffy.
D: To some extend, you are right. But nothing can beat airplanes with speed and comfort.
A: Since you have only 10 days off, the airplane may be the best choice. After all, nothing is more precious than time. You will get to Dalian in about just a couple of hours.
D: I can’t agree with you more. I’ve made my mind to book an air ticket ASAP.

A:的确。
